The Spaniard Francisco de Montejo founded Mérida on January 6, 1542. Before the Spaniards arrived, the city that is now known as Mérida was already a large Mayan city, known as T’ho. Mérida is home to many sites worth visiting, such as the beautiful large plaza where the oldest cathedral on the American continent can be found, the Catedral de San Ildefonso (1561-1598). The hotel is located at the beginning of the famous Paseo Montejo, close to most of these famous sites. In a short walking distance is the Regional Anthropology museum within the Cantón Palace, colonial buildings, and a local ice cream parlor worth trying. The new Great Museum of the Mayan World is a must-see, it is on the way to the archeological city of Dzibilchaltún with it’s cenote, and the beach is a 40 minute drive.
Next to the amazing sights that Mérida offers, Casa San Ángel is also a perfect place to explore the surrounding state of Yucatán. Famous Mayan sites like Chichen Itza (one of the seven modern wonders of the world) and Uxmal can easily be visited in a day. Or go to one of the gorgeous cenotes and tropical caribbean beaches that Mexico is famous for.
